Top-selling diamond necklace at Christie’s image

A number of diamond jewels Christie’s put on the auction block without reserve smashed their upper estimates and swiped the top three spots at a recent auction. 

The top lot was a rivière necklace featuring 67 square emerald-cut diamonds ranging from 1 to 5.03 carats, for a total weight of 82.75 carats, in D  to F color, and VVS1 to VS2 clarity, which brought in $516,600, according to Christie’s. The piece, which was offered without reserve, was estimated to fetch between $300,000 and $450,000 at the December 12 Jewels Online sale. 

In total, Chistie’s offered 211 lots, with the sale total coming to $4.9 million. The auction house also presented a private collection called An Eye for Beauty.  

Here are some of the other top items at the sale: 

Rivière necklace containing 75 emerald-cut diamonds at Christie’s image
Another rivière necklace offered without reserve contained 75 emerald-cut diamonds weighing 89.85 carats in total and sold for $428,400, above its $350,000 upper estimate. The stones ranged from 1 to 3.01 carats, and were G to I color and flawless to VS2 clarity.

This necklace features a chain of 39 pear brilliant-cut diamonds weighing a total of 45.56 carats suspending a pear brilliant-cut, 5.02-carat, D-color, internally flawless diamond. It exceeded its $350,000 top price tag after being offered without reserve to bring in $365,400.

A ring set with an emerald-cut, 7.01-carat, D-flawless diamond garnered $277,200. The piece, which had no reserve price, had a presale estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.

Garnering more than four times its $30,000 upper estimate was this pendant bearing an oval mixed-cut, 11.26-carat Ceylon sapphire with marquise, pear and round diamonds. The jewel, created by Van Cleef & Arpels, went for $126,000.

This unmounted modified rectangular step-cut aquamarine weighs a whopping 496.66 carats. It shot past its $70,000 top price to achieve $119,700.
